Meeting Minutes

Meeting Chair Kingsley Lewis opened the meeting and asked all those in attendance to join in the Island Hymn and Rotary Grace.

Dale Turner, Sergeant-at-Arms canvassed the group for happy dollars.

Acting -Secretary Peter Boswall provided the Secretary’s report.

  • 38 members present and 4 make ups credited.
  • Guests of Rotary: Hon. Robert Ghiz, Premier and Guest Speaker, Barbara Mcnutt, Innovation & Advanced Learning, Jinny Greaves, PEI Literary Alliance, Richard Martin, PEI Literacy Foundation, Selina Suter, Youth Exchange Student, Mary Lou Rogers, Career Bridges, Marsha Bernard, Council of the Federation Literacy Award Winner PEI,  Donna Bernard, Marsha’s Mother, Lori Johnston, Workplace Learning of PEI, Amanda Beazley, PEI Literary Alliance.
  • Buck Watts was a guest of Bush Dumville.

Acting-President, Edna Reid provided members with a report.

  • She noted that the Board of Directors had met the previous week.
  • That there would be a Club assembly to discuss projects concerning the Club’s 100th Anniversary.  The assembly would be held at Camp Gencheff at 7:00 p.m. October 1.
  • Edna also noted that Directors had been assigned to each avenue of club service and would be contacting members.

Kingsley introduced guest speaker Hon. Robert Ghiz, Premier and President of Executive Council.

  • The Premier commended Rotary and members of the Club for their commitment to Literacy.
  • A commitment to Literacy and essential life skills is required by all segments of society and having a positive improvement in the literacy and life skills of individuals will have a positive impact on the future of the Province.
  • The Premier commented on the importance of adult Islanders who recognize the need and who undertake the task of improving their literacy levels.
  • An OECD survey indicated that PEI while it has much to do also has the best score in of the Atlantic Provinces for improving adult literacy.
  • The Council of the Federation Literacy Award is a small recognition awarded to individual who as adults have made an effort to improve their literacy and life skills.
  • The Premier highlighted the effort of Marsha Bernard and presented Marsha to the Club as this year’s Council of the Federation Literacy Award winner.
  • Marsha while working at Cavendish Farms Ltd. has completed her high school equivalency and is now on a waiting list to attend Holland College.

Co-chair Gary Scales thanked Premier Ghiz, for coming to our Club and sharing his insights concerning the importance of literacy and associated life skills.

Meeting Chair Kingsley closed the meeting by asking the group to stand and join in the National Anthem.
